SummaryText
Published by the Soul City Institute for Health and Development Communication, this discussion tool consists of a 15-minute DVD and an easy-to-read booklet to guide discussion. This resource forms part of the Phuza Wize Campaign which aims to build communities' capacity to make Safer Social Spaces and reduce alcohol-fuelled violence. It also seeks to change the way South Africans drink alcohol and create a culture where people drink alcohol safely.
The DVD contains extracts from the Soul City Television Drama Series 10 to highlight how alcohol abuse affects lives. In the video, Thabo, the school principal, faces a drunk-driving charge and has to face the consequences of possibly paying a fine of R120 000, losing his driver’s licence, or even being sentenced to six years in jail for his crime. Another character, Milton, has fallen in love with the woman of his dreams, yet they have to face the consequences of having had unprotected sex while under the influence of alcohol.
The booklet provides information on alcohol abuse and its effects and also contains questions to support discussion and debate triggered by the DVD. The discussion tool is intended to be used to trigger discussions and debate as a part of community dialogues; in a discussion group in a clinic or other formal learning settings; or to watch and talk about with family and friends.
