Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Tounga 2 Listen! It Concerns You

This cartoon, which is produced by children and for children, continues the story of Tounga, a young boy who leaves his village for the big city in search of a better future and then returns. After the first film Tounga, It can happen to you (accessed by clicking here.), Tounga takes on the project of representing children to the village chief so that they might have a voice in the village assembly.

From the website: "This second one is justified by the fact that [the] awareness campaign on children's rights is becoming more and more difficult to organize, because of distances and the number of people to reach at the same time. Discussions between adults and children are often theoretical to a point that children find it hard to convey the essential point of their message on the rights. This film guides us during our discussions/debates activities with parents, authorities, employers and children themselves. The objective is not to encourage people who are concerned to recite children's rights, but to help them implement their rights through concrete acts, as shown in this cartoon."

The cartoon was created by the African Movement of Working Children and Youth (AMWCY, in French: MAEJT, in Portuguese: MACJT).  The AMWCY also has a monthly electronic newsletter called "Calao Express" that provides information on the activities of Working Children and Youth at all levels (grassroots, associations, national and international levels).
