Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

African Women's Development Fund - Main Grants Program

The African Women's Development Fund (AWDF) funds local, national, sub-regional, and regional organisations in Africa working towards women’s empowerment. The AWDF is an institutional capacity-building and programme development fund, which aims to help build a culture of learning and partnership within the African women's movement. In addition to awarding grants, the AWDF attempts to strengthen the organisational capacities of its grantees.

The AWDF funds work in six thematic areas:

  • Women's Human Rights
  • Political Participation
  • Peace Building
  • Health, Reproductive Rights
  • Economic Empowerment
  • HIV/AIDS

The AWDF prioritises programmes which develop and promote women's leadership and advocacy across all these themes. These thematic areas have been selected because they feature very highly on the agenda of African women and their organisations.

Click here for more information on AWDF's priority theme areas.

What types of grants do AWDF support?
The AWDF gives grants for projects related to any of the thematic areas specified above. Applicants are expected to build relevant and reasonable running/core costs into their project proposals. Grants are made to national and regional organisations for aspects of organisational growth and development such as strategic planning, developing fundraising strategies, communications systems, retreats, governance systems, etc. Grants cover capital costs such as purchase of computers, printers, and photocopiers.

The AWDF makes grants in three cycles each year. Applications can be sent in at any time.

Size of grants
Organisations can apply for grants ranging from US$1,000 - US$25,000.

I am the coordinator of Women Creative Hands Organization , a non profit community based association promoting the well being of rural poor women in the Konye sub-division in South west  region of Cameroon. We have presently trained about 40 individuals in Konye Council Area, some of the young girls have skills in sewing but lack sewing machines and funds to get started. Most of these girls are the breadwinners of thier families, who are local farmers and very poor. We are a registered association by the government and partner with the Ministry of Women Affaires.  We will be vey delighted if any Donor organization can help us, let these young ones come out of poverty.

We are anxiously looking to hear from your organizations.

Coordinator
