Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

The Agents of Polio Eradication

"Sometimes it takes different methods of communication to get a story told around the world."

This animated video from Rotary International as part of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) tells the story of the global fight to eradicate polio in cartoon form. It begins with the premise that a little girl, who has been vaccinated against polio, is holding her baby brother, who has not been vaccinated; she wants to protect him from harm. Luckily, the viewer learns, a band of polio heroes fights polio every day.

Dramatic music and colourful images portray:

  1. The virus hunter, who has been specially trained to track down the virus - a faceless, formless adversary that can strike anywhere.
  2. The strategist, who mounts state-of-the-art campaigns against polio
  3. The advocate, who raises funds and awareness to facilitate the movement to keep going: We have elimated 99% of cases and can't stop now.
  4. The immuniser, who risks danger to bring the polo vaccine to children in need no matter the risk.

None of these 4 agents can do it alone. "We're all in this together!" The viewer is urged to join the fight by helping a virus hunter, supporting a strategist, becoming an advocate, and assisting an immuniser.
