AIDS: Profile of an Epidemic

This book is structured in three major sections. The first section provides an overview of the efforts, obstacles, and achievements in the battle against AIDS throughout the Americas. It presents original articles contributed by physicians, epidemiologists, virologists, lawyers, and other experts working on AIDS in many countries of the Americas. Some of these articles showcase national AIDS programs undertaken in specific countries; others highlight specific epidemiological situations or problems encountered in given countries or subregions; still others offer general discussions and analyses of issues such as public education, legal, and ethical considerations.

The second section presents the views of various experts on the validity of current projections of the course and scope of the AIDS epidemic, and demonstrates that even with our current knowledge, these views differ widely and predictions for the future remain uncertain.

The third section is a collection of reports that includes an overview of the epidemic and efforts to combat AIDS. In addition, some basic information on transmission and effects of the disease is included, as well as summaries of selected technical research. The last piece in this section is a report on the World Summit of Ministers of Health on Programmes for AIDS Prevention, held in London in January 1988.
