GWI collaborates with leaders in the field from right here in Washington, DC, across the country and around the world to build a network of people committed to improving the lives of women and girls.

GW’s Global Women’s Institute is seeking an Associate Director who will serve as project director of a seven-year research and evaluation project on violence against women and girls (VAWG). The position will provide leadership and direction to the project, define and implement activities to achieve project objectives, and manage project activities in accordance with the project agreement. Based either in Washington, DC or the UK, this position will be responsible for ensuring that the project is implemented in accordance with donor regulations, GW policies, and international standards of researching VAWG. Supported by a team of researchers and administrators, and reporting to the Institute Director, this position will lead a consortium of core and associate partners to implement approximately 40 monitoring & evaluation studies of interventions to end VAWG.

This position typically provides research, policy analysis and strategic counsel to the center/institute, through management of a team of research professionals. This position typically monitors and analyzes federal and state policies and proposals, and conceives and designs proposals for new project work, prepares grant proposals, and manages research project budgets. This position typically develops and implements strategic short and long-term plans aimed at enhancing the services and mission of the Institute/Center. This role manages the daily operations of the center/institute including staff and financial oversight. This is a management position at the university that, in addition to leading a work unit, leads and supervises staff directly, makes hiring decisions, provides coaching, training and mentoring, manages performance and determines future staffing needs.

The position is contingent on funding.

The Associate Director will:

Establish workplans, set performance targets, review progress, and identify challenges to achieve project objectives; Ensure regular updates, communications, and joint planning and implementation among all parties; Manage relations with consortium partners; Manage cooperation with consortium partners, partner organizations and government officials

Oversee and monitor the financial management of the project; Ensure timely, accurate and good quality reporting to the donor and others; and Ensure GW meets project contractual, legal, and financial requirements.

Represent the consortium as top level liaison with donor

Manage external relations by representing the project and the organization in the public and ensuring the distribution of information about project achievements and lessons learned, in coordination with secretariat and research uptake team

Performs other work related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will hold a BA/BS in a related discipline plus 6 years of relevant professional experience. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position.

Preferred Qualifications:

Masters level education in gender, public health or a related subject preferred;

Proven ability to lead diverse staff and teams, manage projects, manage performance, foster a positive working environment and manage issues sensitively and diplomatically;

Excellent understanding of research design and methodology and of VAWG/gender research;

Experience working with DFID

Substantial experience in M&E research focusing on VAWG and gender or in Public Health with a focus on VAWG;

Proven ability to represent an organization at a senior level and to build strong relationships at the local, national and international levels;

Experience of managing donor funded contracts;

Excellent IT skills (Word, Outlook, Excel); and

Ability to manage a large and varied workload, work under pressure and meet deadlines.
