Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Summary

This article describes the growing popularity and availability of Wireless
Fidelity (WiFi) systems in India.
The author gives a brief overview of WiFi technology, and how the
wireless Hot Spot, or connection point, can serve multiple users in a given area.

The article emphasises the benefits for laptop-toting executives, who will be able to
connect to the internet in hotels, coffee shops and airports. There are advantages, too, for the
businesses offering this service, who can "adopt this technology to lure customers and keep them indoors."

Costs, according to this article, are not a major inhibitive factor, with "good working solutions" for requiring
only a one-time start-up cost of Rs 8,000 to Rs 10,000 and monthly connection fees around Rs 1,500 per month. The article lists requirements for infrastructure and
security for these systems. It goes on to point out that the growth in WiFi will be driven by
2 factors: the availability of broadband and the number of people using laptops.
