Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Domin Familia

In March 2009, Timor-Leste's Ministry of Health (MoH) and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) launched a weekly radio soap opera. Broadcast every Saturday evening on Radio Timor-Leste (RTL), Domin Familia chronicles the story of the Amaral family, a typical Timorese family dealing with the issues of family planning, safe motherhood, and other reproductive health issues. The objective of the 24-episode radio soap opera is to address reproductive health issues in an entertaining way, ensuring that the audience has access to relevant information intended to increase awareness.
Communication Strategies

This edutainment initiative uses the medium of radio to raise awareness through a dramatic story. Domin Familia features a forbidden love story between Lena Amaral, the youngest of her family, and Julio, the son of a cock-fighter. Lena's older brother Octavio does not support the young couple's union.

Local theatre group Bibi Bulak developed all scripts, and performs the characters. The inclusion of this troupe reflects the MoH's emphasisis on creating culturally sensitive and rights-based materials designed to address the specific information needs of the people of Timor-Leste.
