EDUCAIDS Resource Pack

Led by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), with the collaboration of the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) Committee of Cosponsoring Organizations (CCO), governments, UN partners, and civil society organisations, this group of online documents seeks to promote, develop, and support comprehensive education sector responses to HIV and AIDS.

Recognising the vital role of the education sector in the national response to AIDS, the UNAIDS Committee of Cosponsoring Organizations (CCO) launched EDUCAIDS in March 2004. EDUCAIDS has also been designated by UNESCO’s Executive Board as one of three core UNESCO initiatives to achieve Education for All (EFA). EDUCAIDS has two primary goals:

• To prevent the spread of HIV through education; and
  
• To protect the core functions of the education system from the worst effects of the epidemic.
  

Through EDUCAIDS, UNESCO and its partners support efforts at the country level to promote comprehensive education sector responses to HIV and AIDS; plan and prioritise actions; and build partnerships and promote coordination. This resource pack is designed to support ministries of education and other stakeholders at the country level. It aims to give technical guidance on developing and implementing policies, determining resource allocations, and implementing programmes for education and HIV.

It includes:

• EDUCAIDS Framework for Action, which outlines five specific components of comprehensive education sector responses to HIV and AIDS implementation support available through the EDUCAIDS initiative.
  
• EDUCAIDS Technical Briefs, which includes 35 two-page summaries of key issues related to an education sector response. Each brief can be used as a stand-alone reference, and together they offer guidelines on the continuum of activities required to respond to the epidemic at the country level.
  
• EDUCAIDS Overviews of Practical Resources, which provide guidance on the technical and operational aspects of the response. Each Overview is introduced by a resource summary list and is followed by a two-page analysis of the included resources identifying crucial resource gaps, needs for further research, and additional online resources.
