Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

"C4D aims to create a more balanced power environment where development decisions can be made. It work empowers the people and communities most affected by development issues to take proactive ownership of communication processes so their voice is heard in decisions that impact their lives. These processes ensure the best chance of social outcomes and change that benefit their community at large."

This video provides an introduction to communication for development (C4D), as well as a focus on how good communication underpins good practice and can be used to engage communities in the field. The Centre for Communication and Social Change, Brisbane C4D Network, and Brisbane Development Circle presented this discussion on C4D practice on July 31 2014.

The event featured 3 speakers with C4D experience who share examples of their work Australia and abroad focusing on participatory development communication, grassroots engagement, and community mobilisation. The speakers include:

  • Elske van de Fliert, Associate Professor at the University of Queensland and a Director at the Centre for Communication and Social Change.
  • Tamara Plush, who has more than 20 years of experience in video production – focusing most recently on using participatory video (PV) and community digital storytelling as a tool to address climate change and poverty reduction. She is the current coordinator of the Brisbane C4D Network.
  • Martin Potter, who makes cross-platform, participatory media projects including Big Stories, Small Towns, which has screened at more than 40 international festivals and won numerous awards. He is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Centre for Communications for Social Change at the University of Queensland.
