Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

SummaryText
This is a book for students, public health practitioners, healthcare providers, and other professionals with an interest in health communication. Written by a senior health communication practitioner who is the Founder and Principal of Strategic Communication Resources, as well as an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Public Health at New York University (in the United States, or US), the book draws upon the author's 18 years of US and international experience working with non-profit organisations, corporations, communications agencies, governments, universities, and research laboratories. Step by step, the book outlines the theory, practice, and key action areas of health communication and offers detailed instructions on how to design, implement, and evaluate health communication interventions that would affect health and social behaviour and ultimately help improve public health outcomes.

This book is divided into three parts:
  • Part One focuses on defining health communication - its theoretical basis as well as its contexts and key action areas.
  • Part Two focuses on the different areas of health communication: interpersonal communications, public relations and public advocacy, community mobilisation, professional medical communications, and constituency relations.
  • Part Three provides a step-by-step guide to the development, implementation, and evaluation of a health communication plan.
A comprehensive glossary and two appendices are also included in this book.
