Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

How should we reach youth with SRH messages?

Knowledge and use of contraceptives are central elements to reduce unplanned pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections among young people, but it is obvious that the achievement of these goals requires a more comprehensive approach, with the development of a positive adolescent’s sexuality as a necessary component.

There is a need to strengthen approaches to provide contraceptives. This must not be misunderstood to mean that primary prevention through abstinence is ignored or forgotten but that girls that are already sexually active must know about contraceptive use.

Utilizing a combination of SBCC approaches that promote sex education among youth plays a vital role in increasing knowledge and empowering young people, especially against unwanted pregnancy.

Addionally, over the years, reaching young people with SRH messages has faced many challeges, very expensive campaigns have yeileded low results because as programmers we make assupmtions while designing our intervention without being specific.

We used the Human Centred Design to create/design tailolred made interventions for the young people in the districts where we were working.

I will be presenting an abstract on this at the #SBCCSummit #WhatWorks
