Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

ICT for Development Success Stories: Youth, Poverty and Gender

2 comments
SummaryText
Published by the Global Knowledge Partnership (GKP), this 100-page publication highlights initiatives that are using Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) to make a real and meaningful difference in communities around the world, no matter how disadvantaged or isolated they may be. These stories on Youth, Poverty and Gender intend to provide snapshots of the learning process that accompanies the introduction and implementation of ICTs in a community development project.

In publishing these stories, the GKP hopes to share experiences and lessons-learned to increase global understanding of how ICTs can be used to address poverty, injustice and inequalities. Conceptually, the idea of knowledge-sharing and 'storytelling' underpins all of GKP's programmes and projects. According to GKP, good success stories have the ability to inspire and motivate communities. This is what the GKP hopes will happen when they recognise communities that have used ICT to uplift and empower themselves.

Success Stories include:
  • Integrated Education and capacity building for girls and children, Nepal;
  • Rwanda Youth Rehabilitation Initiative;
  • Strengthening and empowering low-income communities through Digital Inclusion, Brazil;
  • Thai RuralNet's Social Incubator Service.
