Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Demographic profile of helmet users:
Among 100 people who responded to an e-mail questionnaire, there was a direct relationship between peoples' age and marital status to helmet usage. Among married people, 91% "always use" helmets; among unmarried people, only 63% do. Whereas 65% of people under the age of 30 said they always use helmets, 100% of those over 30 do. The top reason for using a safety device like helmet was "Safety", followed by "Protection from pollution", "Concern for family", "Road conditions and driving habits of others", and "Because it is mandatory".

Increased Discussion of Development Issues
50% of respondents shared campaign-related information with others.
Access
Of those surveyed, most came to know about the campaign from emailers, news reports, road signs, and the project website. Only 10% of respondents downloaded the "communi-kit" from the project website. Possible reasons for this may be a perceived lack of need for such a kit, or the length of time needed to download the kit.
