Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at lainiciativadecomunicacion.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

SummaryText
Developed as a guide for the annual celebration of Interdependence Day on September 12th around the world, the Interdependence Handbook is a collection of essays, speeches, historical documents and discussion questions on interdependence, considered by the authors to be a guiding principle for civic life in the 21st century. From a number of perspectives, it explores the civic implications of interdependence, and calls for citizens to expand their sense of responsibility beyond community and nation to all the world's people.

The Handbook contains works by Martin Luther King, Jr., John F. Kennedy, Václav Havel, Kofi Annan, Joseph Stiglitz and many other authors and public leaders. Readings focus on the realities of interdependence as they affect all aspects of life - personal, social, political, religious, cultural and economic. The Handbook also includes a section on practical ways to celebrate Interdependence Day in schools, colleges, religious, civic and cultural organisations and whole communities throughout the world.
