Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.
 
Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.
 
We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

The Burkina NICI (National Information and Communications Infrastructure) Plan which is entitled "Plan de Developpement de l'Infrastructure d'Information et de Communication du Burkina Faso : 2000-2004" was officially launched in 2000 under the aegis of the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development, the Ministry of Communication and Culture, and the General Directorate of Informatics. The Plan is expected to contribute to the following:

  • enabling the country feel less its landlocked status
  • improving good governance and the rule of law
  • developing human resource capacity
  • creating new resources and jobs
  • promoting the country

The priority actions identified by the Plan to attain the above objectives aregeared to the following five critical areas:

  • development of the telecommunication infrastructure
  • modernizing the civil service
  • support to research and education
  • development of community information centres
  • trade facilitation

Several follow up committees have been established for monitoring theimplementation of the NICI plan.
