Development action with informed and engaged societies

After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. 

Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future. 

On the transfer, co-founder Victoria Martin expressed her pleasure to see this work continue under Wits' leadership, knowing that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction. 

As Wits, we honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades and look forward building from that strong base. This includes co-founders Warren Feek (1953-2024) and Victoria Martin as well as La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA), which continues independently at lainiciativadecomunicacion.com with links to The CI Global site. We are also eager to forge new partnerships and entertain new ideas as we consider how best to contribute to social and behaviour change in our rapidly evolving environment.

If you are joining the International Social and Behaviour Change Communication (SBCC) Summit in Panama, please join Wits and CILA on Monday, 22 June, to share your thoughts and suggestion for the relaunch of the Communication Initiative. We will be in Pacifica 5 from 12-1:25 for the Refuel, Reflect, and Renew Lunch Series: The Communication Initiative: celebrating a driving force for Communication for Social Change and the way forward. We will reflect on the legacy of Warren Feek and family in creating the Communication Initiative, consider the contributions of CI over the years and then turn our attention towards the future in this dynamic session.

Newman Street Television Programme

Launched in October 2014, Newman Street is an entertainment-education (EE) television series in Nigeria promoting family planning and malaria-prevention practices to an audience ranging in age from 18-40. Set in a vibrant urban slum in Nigeria, the story is a "tale of the quest for fame, love and, acceptance" and how far people will go to accomplish these. Newman Street is a collaboration of the Center for Communication Programs Nigeria (CCPN) and Nollywood Concept Promotions (NCP).
Communication Strategies

Newman Street weaves malaria and family planning messages in an "action-packed script that takes viewers from Newman Street to Highbrow, the posh home of John Atta. The plot boasts all the ingredients of irresistible television - tragedy, mayhem, laughter, love, deception and forgiveness - designed to attract millions of viewers". Newman Street is directed by "the award winning Bond Emeruwa and Fred Amata, and features Nollywood celebrities like Bimbo Akintola, Fred Amata, Bimbo Manuel, Sani Danja, Edmond Enaibe, and Sani Mu'azu". Newman Street is broadcast weekly on Sundays at 8:30 pm on digital TV, NTA StarTimes Channel 105, as well as on national network AIT every Monday at 7:00 pm.

The story's characters include Andy, who is a handsome barber who dreams of Afro hip-hop stardom. He is in love with the young and beautiful Funke but is torn when sexy Caroline lures him with promises of helping him get his big break. Mama Ejiro sews fashionable clothes in front of her family's home. She aspires to get training and improve her business. There is the upright Teacher Chongo who favours 1960s fashions and loves jazz and high-life music. John Atta is the heir to an oil company who seems to have a perfect life but lives at the mercy of his domineering mother.

Script development relied on current data from research on the thematic issues and writers were guided by a crop of content specialists. Before final production, to maximise impact and increase the appeal of Newman Street, all elements of the drama were pre-tested, and relevant suggestions from the audience were incorporated.

Newman Street aims to translate EE to its social media platforms using non-traditional approaches. The "story mode" tells the stories of characters using pictures and conversation bubbles to drive messages home (e.g., "we never took malaria seriously and we paid a heavy price"). The picture quotes include direct messages, often featuring characters from the series (e.g., "the right family planning method is the one that suits you"). The "awoof puzzle" is an activity for audiences of the TV series, with mobile phone recharge cards up for grabs. On International Days, such as World Malaria Day, Newman Street social media channels take more direct approaches in delivering messages. Newman Street's social media platforms are evaluated monthly using analytics provided by each platform.
