A Response to the Review from the Director of Wan Smolbag Theatre
I would like to thank the review team for this timely review of KPH. It is not only useful for future development of KPH but the process itself also built up the monitoring skills of those involved in the focus group activities.
There is nothing in the review that we would take issue with, although there is one issue we would perhaps "temper" a little. It is true that KPH has become small. This is, we feel, a result, paradoxically, of its success. Although one or two people might be deterred because of the difficulties outlined in the review, it is still full for at least part of everyday and clinic figures continue to rise. This confirms the main tenet of the review that KPH proves the case for non-formal, relaxed, friendly RH provision, particularly for youth. I suppose in 1998 we could not be sure that the service would catch on. We all knew it was needed and the community play project gave us the impetus to do what we could at the time with the money available. Even if we had been aware of the depth of the need we had to go ahead at that time if we were to maintain the enthusiasm of the community we were working with.
We hope that with this review to support us, we will be able to raise the funds from those donors who would fund buildings or their extensions, to further strengthen the facilities.
We would like to express our thanks to Ms Lilly Andre and Ms Leitangi Phillip, Department of Health, for their contributions to the review. We hope that their participation has given them a better knowledge of the services offered by the KPH and look forward to a closer working relationship with the DOH in the future in our efforts to make KPH as successful as possible.
Very special thanks go to Dr Rufina Latu and SPC for undertaking this task that will greatly benefit the KPH in its future. Dr Rufina for being part of the review from the start to its successful and satisfactory conclusion. We acknowledge that it was not easy for SPC to release Dr Rufina from her other responsibilities to undertake the major role in the planning and executing of this review and we are very grateful. WSB looks forward to continuing the relationship with SPC into the future.
We would also like to thank all of those agencies – UNFPA, DFID, AUSAID, IWDA, ARHA, NZAID, UNICEF and the Packard Foundation – who have supported KPH in one way or another. Without the financial support that you have provided over the three years of KPH's existence, we would not be where we are today. We hope that we can go forward with you all over the coming years.
Peter Walker,
Director, Wan Smol Bag Theatre
