Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

SummaryText

"Journalists have an important role to help to fill information gaps and counter misinformation and disinformation about the spread of disease."

This 2-part webinar offers guidance to journalists on how to convey and help their audiences understand COVID-19 response efforts, such as self-isolation and quarantine, and means of preventing transmission. It was hosted by Internews Global Health Media Advisor Ida Jooste along with representatives of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), the World Health Organization (WHO), and BBC Media Action.

A total of 170 journalists from around the world attended the webinar and asked questions about: avoiding creating fear or stigmatising affected people, dealing with rumours and disinformation, and communicating prevention measures.

The Internews team is continuing to engage with journalists by sharing a variety of sources and resources and by responding to specific and ongoing questions via WhatsApp groups and other channels.
