Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Supporting Independent Media and Access to Independent Information in Belarus

Sweden's Institute for Further Education of Journalists (Fojo Media Institute) has been offering training programmes in Belarus since 1997 in an effort to increase professionalism among Belarusian journalists and to strengthen independent media. Fojo has 2 local partners in Belarus: the Belarusian Association of Journalists (BAJ) and the Institute of Journalism at the Belarusian State University (BGU).
Communication Strategies

"Supporting Independent Media and Access to Independent Information in Belarus" offers a wide range of educational seminars for Belarusian journalists affiliated with BAJ as well as for the students and professors at BGU. These courses focus on topics such as political reporting, online journalism, radio and television training, and photojournalism. Fojo also provides special training for journalists who are about to become professional trainers. As a part of the exchange with BGU, Belarusian student journalists are invited to Sweden to study the role of news media in a functioning democracy.
