Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Teachers Portal - East Africa

0 comments
East Africa Teachers.net is a portal for teacher's colleges in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda initiated by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) and developed by the Learning Resource Centre (LRC) in Nairobi, Kenya. The aim of the project is to integrate information and communication technology (ICT) into educational programmes through the provision of internet access as part of a comprehensive capacity-building programme and the establishment of a 'learning community'.
Communication Strategies
This project works by using the internet to create a platform for exposure and exchange of information on the part of educational institutions. The portal offers links that provide information about institutions, programmes, new projects, and other relevant information.

Specifically, the portal purports to do the following:
  1. create a virtual network for teachers' colleges in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda;
  2. promote the use of the internet in teachers' colleges in the described sub-region;
  3. share information on ICT projects and resulting active learning strategies in the institutions;
  4. serve as a "meeting place" for discussions among the members;
  5. serve as a platform for the offering of online and /or distance learning courses; and
  6. create a space where educational institutions can market their programmes.
The LRC team is responsible for the coordination of the creation of the portal. A team of 7 lecturers was trained in web design and volunteers a number of hours per week to develop the websites for the teachers colleges and other links.

Key Points
The LRC was established by the Kenya Technical Teachers College (KTTC) funded by the Flemish Office for Development Cooperation and Technical Assistance (VVOB), with additional support by UNESCO.

The website was developed to network all teacher training colleges in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda as part of establishing a site that would include all educational institutions in Eastern Africa.

September 2005 update: Organisers were not able to secure funds to continue this initiative. It was a spin-off of the LRC project in Nairobi (ICT integration in teacher education), but the amount of time and energy required to get information, especially from Uganda and Tanzania, was underestimated. It is not now clear in which direction this initiative will move; for now it is "a sleeping platform". However, the East Africa Teachers.net is still operational.
