Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Transitions Online (TOL) invites entries in this year's photo competition. The best entries will be published on the TOL website. Photographs must be taken within Transitions Online’s coverage region, which comprises Central Europe & the Baltic states; Eastern Europe & Russia; Southeastern Europe; Central Asia; and the Caucasus. The competition is open to everyone, of all ages and from all countries. Entries from amateurs and professionals are equally welcome. Each entrant may submit up to four photographs, but no entrant may win more than one prize. Photographs may be entered in four categories:

  • Politics and democracy
  • Industry and economy
  • Education
  • Everyday life

TOL will grant one first prize and three prizes for runners up.

  • First prize €200
  • Runners up €50

The format for entries is the following:

  1. Photographs must be submitted in digital format, as a JPEG file no larger than 3MB, and sent to photo@tol.org (According to TOL, if you experience problems sending your picture via email, you may send it to the address in the contact information below on a CD-Rom with your name and email on the disc.)
  2. Each entrant must submit their full name and contact details: address, email address, and telephone number.
  3. Entries should include a short description of what the image shows, its location, the date it was taken, and why it is relevant to the competition.

By entering the competition, participants agree that they own the rights to the photographs that they submit. Transitions (TOL) recognises that participants own the copyright to their pictures, but, by submitting photographs, participants agree that TOL has the right to publish the photos on its website and at its events free of charge, as long as it credits the photographer.
