Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

SummaryText
The Research-Based Web Design and Usability Guidelines were developed to assist website designers, managers, and researchers involved in the creation of websites base their decisions on the current and best available evidence. This book was written after two years of research and includes 187 guidelines for effective Web design and organisation of material. According to the authors, this book is particularly relevant to the design of information-oriented sites, but can also be applied across the wide spectrum of websites. It was written to help government, academic, commercial and other entities create websites that are based on user research and not personal opinions. The Guidelines cover such issues as accessibility, home page design, site navigation, writing, graphics and content organisation.

The Guidelines were developed by the Communication Technologies Branch (CTB) of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
