Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

News in the Global Sphere

SummaryText
The launch of CNN"s international news Oulet CNNI in 1985 brought about new forms of global political communication, which have reshaped international political communication. CNNI's effect on globalizing "news" is often associated with McLuhan's metaphor of the "Global Village". However, with the "Global News Machine", CNN has constituted a new global public sphere, a new idea of "globalization", which differentiates McLuhan's vision. The author argues that the new global public sphere can be regarded as a trans-societal sphere of mediation, which involved a global exchange of universal but also - increasingly - particilar news and political information issues. This new diverse global information flow provides the communication platform, on which a global civil society emerges.
"News in the Global Sphere" discusses the history of international communication and develops a theoretical framework for the analysis of current global media developments on the basis of an empricial analysis of CNN's World Report programme.
