Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Client-centred Approach to Reproductive Health, A : A Trainer's Manual

SummaryText
The Population Council has developed a framework for training providers to deliver client-centred reproductive health services. The aim of the approach is to bring about behaviour change in providers by making them more receptive and responsive to client needs. The approach aims to teach providers to treat clients with respect and dignity, to assess their reproductive health needs holistically within the context of their household circumstances, and to negotiate solutions that clients are able to implement. This approach involves four interconnected steps: Salutation, Assessment, Help, and Reassurance, known by the acronym SAHR. The training manual describes the SAHR approach and is meant to facilitate training reproductive health providers in how to offer client-centred services.

The manual has three sections. Section one is an overview of the manual and training in general, including methodologies and tools. Section two comprises the training modules. Each module describes the individual components of client-provider interaction and includes learning objectives, key learning points, a schedule, and a list of materials required. Trainer notes and step-by-step instructions for each activity are included within each module. Section three contains support materials to help trainers prepare for the sessions.
