Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Media Education

SummaryText
This kit, available in French and English, attempts to address questions about media education, including: the curriculum content; who controls it; who should provide it; and what role the public and families can play. It proposes a prototype of a media education curriculum for secondary school teachers and extends content to adults outside the school system. Its objective is to take into account cultural and societal differences in educating children for media awareness.

It uses a modular approach to curriculum planning presented at a general and an advanced level, following key concepts: media production, media language, representation in the media, the public reception, and pedagogical stages and strategies. In addition to a teachers' manual and accompanying students' handbook, the kit also contains a manual for parents as well as a handbook on ethical relations with professionals and one on internet literacy.

The kit attempts to teach the necessary skills needed to decipher the various types of messages as well as recognise the impact of the content of messages relating to citizenship and sustainability.
