Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Really?

Launched in 2005 by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) World Service Trust (WST), "Really?" is a live phone-in radio programme encouraging young Cambodians to talk about taboo subjects. The weekly programme is broadcast on radio station FM 103.
Communication Strategies

This initiative uses the medium of radio to encourage urban youth to discuss difficult subjects, while entertaining them. BBC trained young broadcasters to produce the show, which mixes music and popular culture with frank discussion. Young people are encouraged to phone the programme to ask tricky questions about difficult issues, including drug abuse and safe sex.

Development Issues

Health, Youth.

Key Points

Organisers contend that the young team behind the production is so successful that FM 103 receives up to 100 calls per show. The programme attracts twice as many female callers as male callers under the age of 18.
