The Communication Initiative
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.
 
Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.
 
We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Community Mobilisation for Health and Development (May 13-17 2013)

The Department of Health Education and Behavioral Sciences of Jimma University, in collaboration with AfriComNet, is running this 5-day intensive course designed to maximise the capacity of professionals working at different local and international organisations on health and development agendas. The course content includes: introduction to community mobilisation; preparing to mobilise; organising the community for action; exploring health and development issues and setting priorities; planning and acting together; communication strategies that support community mobilisation; and evaluating together.
Objectives of the course are to:

  • familiarise participants with the concept of community mobilisation;
  • empower participants to diagnose community problems with the community members themselves and act up on the problem together;
  • build the skills of participants on communication strategies relevant to community mobilisation for health and development; and
  • equip participants with skills to measure success in community mobilisation for health and development.

Registration information:
Deadline date for application: April 20, 2013 for Ethiopians and March 31, 2013 for international applicants.
This course is meant for programme managers, health promotion officers, communication officers, and health and social workers involved in health and development programmes at local, national, and international level. Applicants are requested to send a letter of motivation (maximum of one page) using the email below explaining why a candidate needs the training and the expectations from the training, along with updated CV. The course fee is US$350 for international applicants and Ethiopia Birr 2000 for local participants.
