Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Summary

The summaries and presentations below were part of a March 2007 Polio Communication Technical Advisory Group (TAG) meeting hosted by the United Nation's Children's Fund (UNICEF) in India. The proceedings included participation by representatives from Rotary International, the World Health Organization (WHO), the Government of India, Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS), the CORE Group, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and WHO's South-East Asia Regional Office (SEARO). At this meeting, state-specific presentations were given by communication practitioners in the two polio endemic Indian states (Uttar Pradesh and Bihar), and poster sessions were conducted to highlight innovations and learnings from two other polio-affected states (West Bengal and Mumbai). The objectives of the meeting included the following:

  1. To critically review India's polio communication strategies and activities for polio vaccination, routine immunisation (RI) and integrated expanded programme of immunisation (EPI) progress.
  2. To develop the technical recommendations for these states which, when implemented, will improve polio and routine immunisation communication performance.
  3. To develop and suggest milestones which will be effective in measuring the impact of communication strategies for improved polio eradication and expanded routine immunisation, with the goal of streamlining the initiative towards the proposed 2008 deadline for global polio eradication.
