Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

WomenAction 2000 - Global

WomenAction 2000 is a global network of women's information and media organisations formed to ensure world access to the decisions made during the UN Special Session of the General Assembly (Beijing Plus 5) entitled “Women 2000: Gender Equality, Development and Peace for the 21st Century” in New York, 5-9 June 2000. The Special Session was a follow-up to the 4th UN World Conference on Women held in Beijing in 1995, where a comprehensive Platform for Action established guidelines for governments to advance the status of women.
Communication Strategies

2 daily newspapers, one global (WomenAction) the other specifically African issues (Flamme), were produced and disseminated via e-mail lists and the web site. A daily internet TV programme (French) and daily internet-based radio broadcasts (Spanish) brought the conference to many viewers and listeners. The WomenAction 2000 Internet Café provided access to women to send thousands of messages to their constituencies and to receive information. One WomenAction 2000 partner trained a group of NGOs in journalism skills and the 40 ensuing articles were sent home for publication and/or broadcast. WomenAction 2000 will continue to provide information for the advancement of women using interactive TV, radio, web sites and e-mail lists. The WomenAction global web site contains resources to assist NGOs in their efforts to monitor the implementation of the Platform for Action in their own countries, and is a gateway to regional WomenAction 2000 sites along with other links to women's action web sites.
Development Issues

Women, rights.
Key Points

WomenAction 2000 provided listeners and readers throughout the world with a daily flow of information. In the period leading up to the UN Beijing Plus Five meeting, WomenAction 200 was instrumental in making it possible for women's organisations to become involved in preparations for the meeting.
