Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

YouthCare 2000 and Beyond

YouthCare 2000 and Beyond is a youth-oriented, voluntary non-governmental organisation (NGO) established to complement the efforts of government and other youth-oriented organisations working to contribute to the moral and educational development of secondary school students in Ibadan, Nigeria. Interpersonal communication is the group's key communication medium.
Communication Strategies
YouthCare 2000 and Beyond uses in- and out-of-school lectures and experiences to try to reduce the rising incidence of youth delinquency, absenteeism and dropping out of school, problematic behaviour, violence and bullying, socio-cultural dislocation, falling standards of education, high failure rates, pregnancy, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and HIV/AIDS.

Specifically, in an effort to reach young people and have a lasting impact, the organisation gives talks to youth at public and private schools about values, sex education leadership, and careers. Where possible, these discussions are timed to coincide with students' experiences - e.g., career talks for senior students are held at a time in the school calendar when students are preparing for the University. Volunteer speakers visit schools, approximately 8 per week, reaching between 500 and 2000 students at each school. Schools in remote areas are a special focus; in 2005, the organisation will be partnering with the state programme on HIV prevention in the school system by reaching out to students in rural areas.

The organisation says it aims to take this form of education to the youth where they are. To that end, workshops, seminars, excursions, and camping trips reach out to young people in out-of-school settings.

The various media of lecture engaged by the YouthCare 2000 and Beyond are distributed to students for keepsake and future reference.
