The Communication Initiative
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.
 
Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.
 
We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at lainiciativadecomunicacion.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

17. Colombia: Primera Convocatoria - Premios Iberoamericanos de Comunicación por los Derechos de la Niñez / First Edition - Iberoamerican Awards for Communication on the Rights of the Child

This award is sponsored by the Unicef Regional for Latin America and the Caribbean and AGENCIA EFE ( Spain) and the UNICEF Spanish Committee. Agencia EFE is Spain's largest State press agency, covering news on and for Spain and the Spanish speaking countries. The following text is extracted from the awards' presentation of Per Engebak, UNICEF's Regional Director; Miguel Angel Gozalo, President of Agencia EFE , and Joaquín Ruiz-Gimenez, President of Unicef's Spanish Committee:

"....we believe that there cannot be a higher goal or objective for a communicator, nor a greater source of interest, that the cause of the children and their rights. Despite the significant results obtained in countries regarding children's development, particularly those in the Latin American and Caribbean, in this region there are still more than ninety million boys and girls in conditions of high risk and poverty...Despite this panorama, everyday there are more and more examples of positive achievements in diverse areas.

This is why the mass media cannot be absent of this great voice that is being raised in the region, for the protection of the children and their rights. The Ibero-American Awards for Communication on the Rights of the Child are the mechanism for this. We are sure then that we can count with everyone of you for this..."

This is the first edition of the award, which will be issued every two years. Its creation this year, 1999, becomes one of the central acts of the commemoration of the forty years of the Declaration of the Rights of the Child and the tenth anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

The objective of this award is to recognize the work of journalists and social communicators of the region that promote the respect for the rights of boys, girls and youth; stimulate journalistic research in favour of children and youth, and enable the media to dedicate more attention to issues related to children and youth."

For this first edition of the award, the organising committee will receive works that were published or broadcast between January 1rst of 1998 and June 30th of 1999. The deadline for submission is the 31st of July this year. Works must be accompanied by a CV of the author(s), and will be received in either the local UNICEF offices or the EFE agency in any country of the region.

The winners of the awards will be announced this September and the awards' ceremony will take place on November 20th, coinciding with the Tenth Anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

The awards include:

a. Gran Premio Iberoamericano por los Derechos de la Niñez ( Grand Iberoamerican Award on the Rights of the Child)

b. Premio Iberoamericano de Prensa por los Derechos de la Niñez ( Iberoamerican Press Award on the Rights of the Child)

c. Premio Iberoamericano de Radio por los Derechos de la Niñez ( Iberoamerican Radio Award on the Rights of the Child)

d. Premio Iberoamericano de Televisión por los Derechos de la Niñez ( Iberoamerican Television Award on the Rights of the Child)

e. Premio Iberoamericano de Trabajo Gráfico por los Derechos de la Niñez ( Iberoamerican Graphic Award on the Rights of the Child - Graphic Work includes: graphic design, photography, drawing, caricature, or information published via graphics or other similar materials.
