Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

SummaryText

This manual, initially funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID)/Bolivia Health Unit, and developed and revised with support from Pathfinder International and  PROSALUD-Partners in Development, is intended to support training of facilitators of the "Community Self-Diagnosis Process" concerning complications of hemorrhages in the first half of pregnancy, a part of the Postabortion Care (PAC) initiative. In this participatory approach, facilitators take on specific roles in each of the sessions detailed in the manual to register, observe, and support participation of community members in order to achieve the established objectives of this 5-stage methodology for community health care empowerment. The process, developed and refined through grassroots community participation, is outlined in step-by-step sessions in this  manual, which includes planning matrices, presentation preparation, and a system of evaluation.

The cycle of 5 stages includes:

  • Organise the Community for Action
  • Identify and define priority problems during pregnancy
  • Drawing up a plan for community action
  • Implementation and monitoring of the community action plan
  • Participatory Evaluation

Appendices include: a list of participants form, a community PAC survey form, a guide to questions, a cycle of community action, and a guide on taking effective notes in sessions.
